Hospitals vs. Amazon: Competing with Tech Giants

Written by Steer Health | Aug 10, 2023

A recent article on Becker's Healthcare highlights Amazon's ambitious nationwide expansion of its telehealth service, the Amazon Clinic, raising questions about its potential impact on the healthcare industry. The move has prompted discussions within the community about the competition hospitals might face from the tech giant.

While Amazon doesn't have an owned telehealth platform or providers, it connects patients with companies such as Curai Health, Hello Alpha, SteadyMD, and Wheel. Until now, the Amazon Clinic benefits patients with minor, episodic health problems and people without health insurance. But hospitals are becoming increasingly aware of the growing competition, due to Amazon's high recognition and huge customer base.

How hospitals can compete with Amazon

It's fascinating to see Amazon's rapid expansion into the healthcare landscape, catering to consumers' demand for convenient and accessible virtual care. The tech giant's move aligns perfectly with its consumer-centric approach, emphasizing efficiency and convenience.

However, it's important to recognize the unique strengths that traditional hospitals possess – a foundation built on trust and community involvement. While Amazon Clinic offers quick and cheap on-demand care, the established relationships and trust that patients have with their primary care providers and local healthcare institutions are invaluable. Hospitals play an integral role in treating ailments and fostering a sense of belonging within communities.

As healthcare continues to evolve, there's a clear need for traditional hospitals to embrace digital transformation. By leveraging technology to enhance patient experiences, streamline processes, and provide seamless virtual care, hospitals can bridge the gap between consumer expectations and the personalized, human touch they've always provided.

In this ever-changing landscape, the key lies in striking a balance between Amazon Clinic's convenience and the holistic, community-centered approach that hospitals inherently embody. By adapting and innovating, hospitals can position themselves as strong competitors in digital healthcare, offering a comprehensive and trusted alternative to Amazon's services.
